Taxpayers whose information is stolen, and used to file a fraudulent return are victims of tax related identity theft. Taxpayers who suspect they are victims of identity theft should:
- File a tax return even if they have to paper file.
- File Form 14039.
- Alert the Federal Trade Commission.
- If they believe a fraudulent return has been filed request a copy of the fraudulent return. Reference IRS.gov Instructions for Requesting a Copy of a Fraudulent Return.
